Nepal Visa for US and UK Citizens: Fees, Extensions and Entry Checklist (2026)
US and UK citizens need a tourist visa to enter Nepal, and they can get one on arrival or apply in advance. The Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) lists the fees as US$30 for 15 days, US$50 for 30 days and US$125 for 90 days, all multiple entry. The UK government says your passport should have an expiry date at least six months after the day you enter Nepal. This page focuses on what UK and US travellers should check, how extensions are charged, and what to carry. For the step-by-step arrival process, see our Nepal visa on arrival guide.
Nepal tourist visa fees for US and UK citizens
| Visa length | Fee (USD, multiple entry) |
|---|---|
| 15 days | US$30 |
| 30 days | US$50 |
| 90 days | US$125 |
These figures come from the NTB tourist visa page. Some older pages online still show lower fees, so confirm the current amount with the Department of Immigration before you travel. You can also estimate your cost with our Nepal tourist visa fee calculator.
How to apply: on arrival, online first, or in advance
- On arrival: NTB says tourist visas are issued on arrival at Tribhuvan (Kathmandu), Pokhara and Gautam Buddha (Lumbini) airports and at Nepal’s land entry points.
- Online form first (UK guidance): the UK government says you can apply online up to 15 days before arrival, then collect and pay for the visa at the airport.
- In advance: you can apply at a Nepali embassy or mission. NTB says a visa issued by a mission must be used within six months of the issue date. The UK government notes this can speed up immigration.
- Payment: NTB says international credit cards are accepted. The UK government advises paying by card if you can but carrying cash as a backup, with US dollars preferred.
Passport and documents to carry
- Passport validity: the UK government says at least six months after your entry date. NTB only says “valid passport”, so for US citizens the safest approach is to follow the same six-month rule and check with your airline.
- Photo: NTB asks for a passport-size photo with a light background.
- Insurance and accommodation: the UK government says you may need proof of travel insurance covering healthcare and repatriation, and confirmation of your first night’s accommodation. See travel health insurance for Nepal.
- Health certificates: a yellow fever certificate is needed if you arrive from a country listed as a transmission risk, according to the UK government.
Children: who gets a free visa?
NTB lists a free visa for children under 10 “except US citizens”. That means a US child under 10 still needs a paid visa, while the exception is not mentioned for UK children. Confirm this with the Department of Immigration before you fly, because rules for children can change.
Extending your Nepal visa: cost and limits
NTB says extensions are handled by the Department of Immigration in Kathmandu or Pokhara. The listed charge is US$45 for a minimum 15-day extension, plus US$3 for each additional day. The UK government says you can extend online, up to a total of 150 days in one year.
| Extension | Cost (our calculation from NTB rates) |
|---|---|
| 15 days | US$45 |
| 30 days | US$45 + (15 x US$3) = US$90 |
| 60 days | US$45 + (45 x US$3) = US$180 |
A 90-day visa plus a 60-day extension reaches the 150-day yearly limit. These are our calculations based on the published rates, not an official fee table, so check the final amount at the immigration office.
Overstaying: why you should extend early
The UK government calls overstaying “a serious crime” that can lead to significant fines or imprisonment. NTB lists a late-extension fine of US$5 per day. Apply for an extension before your visa expires, especially if weather or flight disruption delays your trek. If you plan a long stay for remote work, see the Nepal digital nomad visa guide.
